1a: Activate your AGOL account

Background

I have provided you with a separate AGOL account on Duke’s Portal so that you can keep items created for this class separate from whatever you might have in your Duke NetID AGOL account. Follow this procedure to ensure your account is working and to explore some of the various capabilities available in this account that may not be enabled in your NetID account.

Activate your account

The first step will be to activate your new AGOL class account.

  • Navigate to https://dukeuniv.maps.arcgis.com
  • Log in using the following credentials:
    • Your username is your netID followed by “_env790”, e.g. if your Net ID is user123, log in as user123_env790
    • Your password is your netID followed by “#” and then your Duke ID (on the back of your Student ID), for example user123#00123456
  • When you log in for the first time, you will need to reset your password.

Customize your profile

After logging in successfully, customize your profile:

  • Feel free to change your name. However, you might want to include “790” or something that easily distinguishes this account from your Duke NetID account.
  • Set your profile visibility.
  • Examine what licenses you have access to?
  • Find and request to join the ENV790-WebGIS group.

Explore the ArcGIS Online Interface

  • What does each tab to? Are there any that aren’t obvious?
  • Where do you access the training modules for learning more about ArcGIS?
  • What’s the most viewed item in Duke’s AGOL portal? What kind of item is this? What are other item types and how do they differ?
