2: Reflections on Katie Warnell's talk
We were fortunate to have someone with direct experience working with web-based GIS in a professional setting. In our next class, we will begin with a discussion on what you learned from Katie’s talk. I offer the discussion questions below; please come to class prepared to engage on a conversation on these topics. Feel free to draw upon experiences you’ve had personally, or knowledge from reading Ch1 of Getting to Know Web GIS into the discussion.
-
Did anything about hearing Katie’s talk alter your concept of what web-based GIS or what it can do? What was it and how did it change your perspective?
-
Did some things Katie demonstrate make working with web-based GIS appear easier or harder than what you had previously imagined? What were they?
-
Are there particular aspects of web-based GIS that you are eager to learn more about? Aspects you’d rather avoid?
-
What are some key features of web-based GIS that Katie showed that don’t seem possible using basic desktop GIS? Can desktop GIS do things that web GIS can’t do or doesn’t seem to do well?
-
What do you see as similarities or difference between AGOL and Google Earth Engine (GEE)? What might make you decide to learn more about on or the other?
-
What skills, beyond what you’ve learned about GIS already, do you see as being useful in successfully working with web-based GIS?
