1. The data

  • Navigate to the Climate Mapping for Resilience and Adaptation web site.
  • Click on the Open Data link (or scroll down the page).
  • Explore Hazards
  • Click on the National Risk Index Counties dataset
    • Note that you can filter the data
    • Note that you can download this dataset in several formats
  • Back on the :information_source: button, on the bottom of the left side bar, click “I want to use this >
    • Select Open in ArcGIS Online; Note the web address of this resource
  • Explore properties of the dataset
    • Who manages this feature layer service?
      • How many other items do they manage?
    • What tags are associated with it?
    • How many layers are associated with this feature layer service?
    • Click on the Data tab
      • What fields are in this dataset?

2. Exploring and visualizing the data

Create a web map from the dataset

  • Sign in to AGOL if you haven’t already
  • With the dataset’s resource page open in your logged in AGOL account, select Open in Map Viewer
    • This will create a new untitled Web Map for you to customize

Familiarize yourself with the layout of the web mapping interface

  • Click on a feature in the map. What is shown?
  • What things do the vertical bar on the far left control?
    • View the legend: what are we looking at?
    • Change the basemap
    • Save your map as “ENV859_<netID>_HazardMap”
  • What do those three dots (“…”) to the left of the layer name do?
    • Show the attribute table of the dataset: what other fields are in this layer?
    • Show the properties of the dataset…
  • What can you control in the properties of your National Risk Index Counties layer?
